I tried Fireworks once, didn't like it much at all
It's not a very commonly used GFX program, so I think you'll be lucky to get any help from anyone on here... although KCLiVES has tried pretty much every GFX program out there

Some starting points for you to consider:
>Try using inbuilt brushes for backgrounds
>Try using inbuilt textures for backgrounds and overlay layers
>Try using inbuilt effects in combinations
>Try feathering and blending
Get tuts from:
http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/Fireworks/1
However I would reccomend trying a program like OpenCanvas, GIMP or Paint.NET as they are much for for computer gfx than web related imagery.
